So this is my first blog for Elite Hairdressing and what better way to start than with one of my greatest passions – Wedding Hair. I could go on and talk about wedding hair all day, but I have written down some of what I think are key points and most important.
I have been fortunate enough to work with many brides on their big day, and with every new booking I take I still get that buzz of excitement that I’m going to be a part of making their day special. One of the most important things about your wedding day, apart from marrying the man of your dreams, is the way you look and feel and hair and make-up plays is an integral part of the process. Brides consider this so important that the search begins almost instantly for the perfect dress and the perfect hair and make-up to compliment the final look.
A few lucky brides know exactly what they are looking for and have a great deal of confidence in how to get what they want and how it will look. If you are like the majority of brides this may be daunting. I think this is a very natural emotion and considering this will be one of the most important days of your life you want to be comfortable and happy with the choices that you make.
Firstly congratulations if you have recently got engaged! You can now begin searching and designing the wedding of your dreams. High on your list of priorities is the dress. When buying the dress try and imagine how you will complete the look, consider your accessories not only for your body but also for your hair as this could dramatically change the overall image and style of the dress. Think about the neck line and imagine how your hair will be shaped, if you have a high detailed neck line you probably wouldn’t want to wear your hair down for instance. Getting as much visual information from the start will help make the process easier
and less stressful.
and less stressful.
Over the years I have found that brides rarely embark on their hair and make-up themselves and wisely so! If your budget will stretch to a professional then that would be my first choice, however if you are on a tighter budget you may want to trust the ability of a friend or a family member spending plenty of time working together and trying different options and styles until you get it right. You can always ask your hair stylist to help and give you both helpful hints and tips. Take plenty of pictures and make a scrapbook that you can keep referring to in the run up to the big day. In the salon we love to use IPads to document all trials and weddings. This is a great visual for you to use as well.
Choosing a professional whether it be in hair or make-up is a big decision and one I wouldn’t rush into. Make sure you do plenty of research into the stylist and ask to see examples of their work so you can be confident of their ability and style. If you are still unsure you can always ask the stylist to meet in person to run through any questions you may have. I find this puts brides minds at ease. Make sure they are fully qualified, fully trained and fully insured and don’t feel uncomfortable asking to see certificates if you have any doubt about their work. Also it is important to remember not every hair stylist feels comfortable doing wedding hair so check with your regular hairdresser if this is something they can do. It is also worth asking at this point whether the hair stylist will travel out to you on the day. It still amazes me how many hair stylists aren’t prepared to start early or travel out of the salon.
Once you have made your decision it’s time for a trial. Now this is one of my favourite parts of the wedding hair process. For the bride this is a great opportunity to try out different styles and most importantly to see if you are comfortable with the stylist. For the stylist it is a great opportunity to show case some of their skills. It is also important that you feel at ease throughout the session. Take photos and always say if you are unsure about something. The right hair and make-up style for the day should compliment your dress, work well with a theme or colour scheme if you have one, but most importantly make you look and feel special and enhance all your very best features.
Another thing to think about is do you have the right hair or look for the style you desire, in most cases hair extensions can be applied so a great deal is achievable. Your stylist will be able to advise you on the best way to achieve your desired look, along with working to your budget. As I said previously take photos, photos and more photos! A hairstyle can look very different in a photo to what you are sat looking at in a mirror. This is where I find brides start to incorporate hair extensions. A lot of brides will rule out hair extensions due to the cost, but now there are so many different options that there is always something to suit everyone’s budget.
I would say most importantly enjoy this whole experience. Make sure you have the confidence to ask questions and to say if it doesn’t feel or look right. I know when I have a trial I am glad of the input so don’t worry and if you need that little bit of extra support then bring a friend or family member along as it’s always good to get a second opinion.
At Elite we take care of the whole wedding hair process, from colouring, cutting, trial, right up to the day itself. We pride ourselves on the service we give, and with the talent within the Elite team there will always be a stylist suitable for you.
So on my final note as we are talking about weddings I feel I need to mention some important people I’ve met who have helped me grow my wedding hair profile over the past 10 years. The first is a very good friend of mine Hannah Middlewick from Cottonwood Weddings. Hannah holds beautiful, bespoke outdoor weddings in the New Forest. Cottonwood has an exclusive portfolio of unique private homes, estates, land & fields to hold any outdoor wedding. She is the lady to go to if you want that extra special touch on your wedding. I have never met anyone with such an eye for detail. Hannah can turn any venue into your fantasy wedding. I love working on the Cottonwood weddings and Hannah’s vision continues to inspire me every time.
The next person is the lovely Cheryl Davies from The Event PA & Captain’s Club. Cheryl has a brilliant reputation due to her exceptional organising skills. This lady knows how to run a wedding. I remember getting a phone call from Cheryl asking me to work with one of her brides, I was over the moon! The Captains Club wanted to work with me?! They only have a handful of wedding industry people they recommend, so I was very honoured when Cheryl gave me this wonderful opportunity. That was 10 years ago, and I absolutely love getting involved with anything Cheryl calls me for. To both of you ladies I am very thankful.
I hope to anyone reading this you have enjoyed my first ever blog, and for all you brides to be I hope you have found this helpful.
